You may not know this, but Hollywood ultra A-lister Tom Cruise has a thing for cake. Every holiday season, the “Mission Imposible” star sends out hundreds of coconut cakes to friends, fellow celebrities, and sometimes random people, usually with a small note attached. Tom Hanks and Kirsten Dunst have gotten them, and they swear the so-called “Tom Cruise cake” is the best they’ve ever had.
What the heck is this cake, and where does it come from?
Answers can be found at Doan’s Bakery, a tiny, fairly nondescript family-run operation in Woodland Hills northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Each year, the small shop is tasked with sending out its signature white chocolate coconut bundt cakes to some of the entertainment industry’s biggest names, and all because Tom Cruise decided he liked the cake once. According to a 2020 article, Cruise discovered the creation when his then-wife Katie Holmes and Diane Keaton were filming a 2008 movie together. The group decided at some point to have a cake-off of sorts; Cruise tasted the two and picked the Doan’s cake — Keaton’s favorite — as his top choice. (We’re not saying it was a prelude to the divorce from Holmes, but we’re not NOT saying it either.)
